Brentford are currently in their middle of fifth Premier League campaign and despite the doom and gloom of pre-season could be on course for their best-ever finish since the 1930s.
With the Bees losing Mark Flekken, Christian Norgaard, Bryan Mbeumo, and Yoane Wissa among others last summer as well as their manager Thomas Frank to Tottenham Hotspur, many expected Brentford to find it difficult this year under new boss Keith Andrews.
However, that couldn't have been further from the truth and now ahead of Thursday's clash with league leaders Arsenal, Brentford could be on for their best finish in 90 years.
Brentford finished fifth in the old First Division in the 1935/36 season which was won by Sunderland while Manchester United won a Second Division that included Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur – very different times.
The Bees ended up dropping down the leagues following the return of football after World War II.
Now football is very different than it was all that time ago but Brentford are back in a familiar position. Should Andrews' side finish seventh in the league it would be their highest finish since the 30s although to match that fifth would be a truly remarkable achievement that would likely earn them Champions League football.
Brentford's best finish since reaching the Premier League came in the 2022/23 season with Ivan Toney scoring 20 league games and Frank's side finishing on 59 points in ninth place.
Conversely, the following season was the Bees' worst since promotion with just 39 points and a 16th place although there was no danger of relegation that season with Luton Town, Burnley, and Sheffield United well off it.
Right now though, Brentford are seventh with the same number of points they earned in the entirety of the 2023/24 season, 39.
The west London side have managed those 39 points in just 25 games and with a points-per-game ratio of 1.56pts this season, they are currently on course to potentially surpass that previous tally of 59 points. It might be close though, 59 points in a 38 game season is the equivalent to 1.55 points-per-game – only a fraction of their current pace.
Of course, there's still a long way to go until the end of the season but if Brentford continue to get big results like they did against Newcastle and Aston Villa then they could have their best-ever Premier League season yet and perhaps could dream of moving even further up the table. Indeed, if it wasn't for a late disallowed Manchester City goal at the weekend, they'd be sixth right now such is the fine margins of the Premier League.
