Premier League Brentford are planning a £3.5 million transfer raid for the Derby goalkeeper Jacob Zetterström as cover for Caoimhin Kelleher.
Premier League side Brentford are planning a £3.5 million transfer raid for Derby County for goalkeeper Jacob Zetterström.
Derby County are braced for a transfer raid from Premier League Brentford for Zetterström, who's been Rams manager John Eustace's first-choice for them in that position in their three games so far this season.
The Rams have had a slow start to the season, with just one point picked up from their opening three games, and they could now have a fresh headache with reports that Premier League Brentford are interested in taking their goalkeeper before the closure of this summer's transfer window.
Journalist Alan Nixon reports on Sunday that Brentford a planning a £3.5 million bid for Derby goalkeeper Jacob Zetterström, who's been their first-choice goalkeeper since signing for them in the summer 2024 transfer window from Swedish side Djurgarden.
Brentford are reported to want Zetterström as cover for first-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who they signed for a fee worth up to £18 million from Liverpool earlier in the summer.
They consider Zetterström to be strong competition for Kelleher for the goalkeeping position at The Gtech Community Stadium.
The loss of Zetterström could be a real headache for Derby manager John Eustace, whose team have already had a difficult start to the new season, with just one point from their opening three matches.
Zetterström signed for Derby from the Swedish side Djurgården in August 2024, with the arrival of the goalkeeper being described at the time as their "biggest transfer of the summer".
A sign of the regard in which the goalkeeper is held can be seen by the fact that Premier League Wolves were also monitoring his progress at that time.
The goalkeeper made 42 appearances for Derby last season in all competitions, keeping ten clean sheets, and has featured in all three of their Championship matches so far this season.
Prior to his arrival at Derby, the 27-year-old goalkeeper had spent the previous four seasons playing in the Allksvenskan, running up 87 appearances for Djurgården, and has been capped by Sweden at international level too.
His loss could be a big one for Derby. The Rams have two other goalkeepers on their books. Richard O'Donnell signed for them on a free transfer from Blackpool in the summer.
He's highly experienced, with over 400 League appearances, but at 36 years of age, can hardly be considered a long-term solution, while Josh Vickers has been with them since 2023 as cover but has only run up 13 league appearances in that time.
But the loss of Zetterström could, with just a week to go before the closure of the summer transfer window, leave Derby County scrambling for a replacement first-choice stopper, or for further reinforcement so that O'Donnell or Vickers can step up to the plate for at least the first half of this season.
