Brighton and Hove Albion chief executive Paul Barber has issued a statement on reports that Manchester United are looking to sign their highly-rated midfielder Carlos Baleba.

United pursuing Baleba

Earlier this evening, the reliable David Ornstein broke the news that United have identified Baleba as their preferred summer midfield target and have already made contact with Brighton to explore the conditions of a transfer.

Baleba has enjoyed a meteoric rise at Brighton since joining the club from Lille in 2023. He has stood out with his commanding displays in midfield, showcasing exceptional technique combined with unrivalled power and physical presence.

The Cameroonian made 36 appearances across all competitions last term, scoring four goals and providing an additional two assists in that period.

Ornstein noted that a deal for Baleba will be difficult to get over the line, given Brighton’s desire to keep the player. The Seagulls are likely to demand a hefty fee to sanction his sale. The Red Devils may also have to secure a raft of player exits before the close of the window to afford Baleba.

Now, Brighton executive Paul Barber has addressed speculation surrounding Baleba’s future amidst interest from Ruben Amorim’s side.

Brighton chief executive comments on Baleba to United

Speaking at a fan event on Wednesday evening, Barber claimed that United haven’t reached out to him regarding Baleba.

Barber emphasised that Brighton would like to retain the 21-year-old’s services, but acknowledged a sale is not entirely off and things may change as the summer window progresses.

He said [as quoted by Sky Sports], “There’s always going to be interest in our players. Manchester United have not been in touch with me.”

“Speculation is speculation. Carlos is a fantastic talent.”

“We hope he’ll be here for years to come, but it’s subject to the dynamics of the football world, which isn’t always predictable.”

Baleba has three years left on his current contract at the Amex Stadium.
