Brighton & Hove Albion defender Rachel McLauchlan said that the team just need to sharpen up their finishing after they were held to a goalless draw by Aston Villa at Broadfield Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Seagulls had their chances on the Barclays Women’s Super League’s opening day but they were unable to take full advantage as they were made to settle for a point.

When speaking to the media after the match, Brighton & Hove Albion defender McLaughlin saw the positives, but admitted that converting chances is an area for improvement in the upcoming games.

“I think overall, there were loads of positives to take from the game,” McLaughlan said. “We are a bit frustrated with not getting the three points, but we’re creating the chances. We now need to finish them, so that’s something we’ll obviously look forward to and try to change up when we go forward.

“I’m not disappointed [with the result], I think everyone put in a fair effort on the pitch. We just need to move forward and finish off the chances that we’re now creating.”

Summer signing Chiamaka Nnadozie caught the eye in the Brighton & Hove Albion goal and McLauchlan was full of praise for her teammate’s performance.

She said “She’s had a strong few games since coming in with us. She’s a real good addition to the squad like the rest of them that have come in.

“She had a really good game and it helps us defenders having a strong player in behind us. You know that if the ball’s going over, she’s right there and I fully trust her like I do everyone on the pitch. It’s been a really good start for her.”

Almost 3,000 were in attendance at Broadfield Stadium and McLaughlan spoke about the importance of the Brighton & Hove Albion fans and their support.

She said “I hope all of the fans realise how much it actually helps us on the pitch. Walking out and hearing the noise that you can get in the stadium, it really helps.

“The little calls, even if it’s not going so well, you know they’ve got your back, so we appreciate every [bit of] support we can get and you know that will help us so much this season.”

Brighton & Hove Albion are next in action when they travel to Manchester City on Friday evening.
