A match that has seen so much post-match debate amongst Newcastle United fans.

However, what did the Brighton fans think of it all…?

Brighton fans commenting via their North Stand Chat forum:

‘I’ve posted on here before about most of my family being Newcastle fans – my grandfather was from Blaydon and a huge Newcastle supporter and we’ve got strong ties to the area. Before the game I visited the memorial stone outside the ground to both my grandfather and my uncle which was special, and have to say I loved the friendly Newcastle stewards who joined me in the search for it and wished Brighton well (“just not today”).

I loved less the fact the away positioning makes the far goal so distant it’s practically in a different time zone but the view from the stand across to the Tyne Bridge, which I know family were at the opening of in 1928, was fantastic. A real sense of family and history interconnectedness through football even if the stripes are a different colour. Up there as one of my favourite away trips for a long time.’

‘Thanks for posting this. I’ve been there 3 times I think, and every time has been sensational — it’s the best away trip. And yes you’re right about their disgraceful positioning of away fans, but you’ve also illustrated perfectly that there are certain compensations to it.’

‘I’m not sure its disgraceful positioning of away fans as such, aren’t we about to move the away fans to away from the goal to give Brighton as much as a crowd advantage as possible. Its long been a contentious issue that at the Amex, away fans are right behind the goal and not up in the top tier as far away as possible’

‘Went to the away game last year. 1-1. Thought it was quiet in comparison to what had been said of their atmosphere.’

‘Yep, been there three times and the famous St James Park atmosphere, just like the famous Anfield atmosphere, is a total myth. Just like us, it’s decent when the game’s good, can be crackling at times, but often bang average like the rest of us.’

‘The barcodes had enough chances…. Take the three points gladly and move on.’

‘I thought we defended really well. Obviously rode our luck a bit in the first half, but I was very impressed how we continually made Newcastle just shuttle the ball out to the wings, and then put in hopeful crosses (which mostly were pretty rubbish). It seemed to me like an awful lot of prep had been done before the match, and everyone worked to the plan.

It was a huge relief to see that the “high line” had been temporarily abandoned (I’m sure it will reappear soon), and both full backs got a lot more support. St James’ Park is NOT the place to play high risk attacking football.

Incidentally, if I was a Newcastle fan I’d have been incredibly pi..ed off….being presented with an opposition midfield comprising four guys with an average age of 20 without a huge amount of Premier League experience…..and letting them get the better of you! Although I admire the average Geordie’s footballing knowledge, I’m sure a lot of them would have been thinking that Tonali, Joelinton and Guimaraes would run the show.’

‘I just checked the stats , barcodes 21 shots to our 10. As I say we did defend well. Until we scored I felt we were most likely going to lose. Certainly Newcastle had the best of the first half excepting the most important stat – goals. We improved a little second half , I think both sides thought it would likely be our day as time went on. I thought the defensive substitution when Welbeck went off was shrewd. But I stick with my original thoughts. Had I been a Newcastle fan I would have been livid about the wasted chances.’

‘Fell down the stairs when celebrating and managed to fracture my foot in two places. Just back from the emergency room with a shiny new cast.

Worth it.’

‘We’ve had so many of these smash and grab 1-0’s and 0-0’s against us at the Amex over the years, and it feels like we rarely get them in our favour.’

‘Didn’t see any of that..but what a great result against the jumped up barcodes.’

‘Fabian Hurzeler deserves a lot of credit today as it was a brilliant away performance from Brighton, especially against a Newcastle side who have plenty of pace in the forward areas.’

‘I think today also showed the depth of our squad. For me it’s better than the other teams trying to get that 6/7th spot.’

‘I didn’t realise how good Newcastle’s home record was so to get that result with so many first choice players not fit enough to start is a brilliant effort.’
