Bristol City should target a move for Liverpool winger Lewis Koumas after his successful Hull City loan spell

Bristol City are enduring a fine summer window with a fresh new team in the background, and with the beginning of the Championship season just around the corner, there is still time for the Robins to secure some more business.

It's been a busy couple of months for Bristol City, as the Robins prepare for another year in the Championship.

Seven new faces have arrived through the doors at Ashton Gate, as Michael Skubala, James Ellis, and Charlie Boss work closely to shape the squad for next season, with a spot in the top eight up for grabs.

Sam Tickle was first through the doors from Wigan Athletic to become the club's new number one goalkeeper, as each of Sam Greenwood, Gibson Yah, Jed Wallace, Lisv Eissat, Bradley Collins, and Lorent Tolaj has followed, with more expected to arrive before the end of the window.

Skubala has been stamping his authority on the Bristol City squad since he arrived from Lincoln City, though he is yet to explore the loan market, as the 43-year-old should be looking to change that sooner rather than later with a swoop for a Liverpool attacker with ample Championship experience under his belt already.

With Skubala having taken the reins at the Robins, the former Lincoln boss has implemented a change in shape at Ashton Gate ahead of next campaign.

Over the last few seasons, under Liam Manning, Gerhard Struber, and briefly Roy Hodgson, Bristol City have tended to, more often than not, deploy a back-five shape, or back-three, depending on how you view the wing-backs.

Three centre-backs has been the norm for Robins supporters in recent memory, but now, Skubala seems to have switched to a back four and has implemented wingers into his system, hence the signing of Wallace.

Each of Sam Greenwood, Scott Twine, Yu Hirakawa, Sam Bell, and Tomi Horvat can all play out wide, but another option there, especially on the left flank, wouldn't go amiss.

With Anis Mehmeti leaving a huge void in the squad following his move to Ipswich Town in January, the Robins should plot a loan swoop for Liverpool and Welsh international winger Lewis Koumas.

Koumas, 20, has spent the last couple of seasons on loan in the Championship with the likes of Stoke City, Birmingham City, and Hull City, the latter of whom he helped to the Premier League last season.

Capable of playing on either flank or through the middle, but best off the left where he can cut in on his preferred right foot, Koumas has already racked up 83 Championship appearances in two years, scoring seven and assisting twice in that period.

The Welshman started just 11 games last season in 40 league appearances across spells with Birmingham and Hull, with his energy and presence in the final third proving to be a constant danger to opposition.

With Stoke, he made 43 league appearances for the Potters, starting 26, the majority under Steven Schumacher and Narcis Pelach, with Koumas' minutes taking a hit following the appointment of Mark Robins in January 2025.

According to FotMob, Koumas managed 73 defensive contributions and 50 tackles across the 2024/25 campaign with Stoke in the league, displaying his ability to defend from the front, whilst his three goals from an expected goals of 5.12 suggest that the Welshman typically found himself in promising positions, but just lacked that clinical touch.

Over a year on, Koumas now has another season in the English second tier under his belt, and has the potential to take the division by storm next campaign.

Another loan spell is likely, with the Welshman unlikely to break his way into the Liverpool side under Andoni Iraola, as Bristol City should be at the front of the queue.

As a more natural option out on the left, as well as playing anywhere else across the frontline, Koumas' addition would give the Robins added depth and energy in the final third, and should be a player that Skubala considers bringing in on loan this summer.

Skubala has been busy at work in the transfer market ever since stepping foot in Ashton Gate, and there is no reason to believe that he is preparing to slow down anytime soon.

Leyton Orient's Dom Ballard is a player the Robins have been pursuing for a while now, with Skubala clearly keen to add more options to his attacking cohort ahead of next campaign.

As a low-cost option, Koumas is effective both from the get-go and from the bench, with his energy and work rate a huge reason as to why he has racked up so many appearances in the second tier despite his age.

Whether Koumas emerges as a genuine target for Bristol City or not this summer, another option or two in the final third appears to be on Skubala's to-do list, and he would be remiss to not consider the Liverpool youngster as a potential addition.
