Manchester United stars Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot are among the host of footballers attending the funeral of their fallen Portugal teammate, Diogo Jota, this morning.
The football world was plunged into grief on Thursday when the news broke that Jota and his brother, FC Penafiel’s Andre Silva, had died in a car crash near Zaragoza, Spain.
The pair had been driving to Santander from Portugal on their way to catch a ferry to the UK as the Liverpool star had been advised not to fly following lung surgery.
The funeral takes place this morning at 10am local time, which is the same as UK time, in the brothers’ home town of Gondomar, Porto, close to FC Porto’s Estadio do Dragão.
Many of Jota’s Liverpool teammates and former teammates, including Alexis Mac Allister, Darwin Nunez, Curtis Jones, Jordan Henderson, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson and Federico Chiesa are also attending the sombre event.
Fernandes and Dalot are joined by former United manager, José Mourinho. Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez and former head coach Fernando Santos are also in attendance along with City stars and Portugal teammates Bernardo Silva and Ruben Dias.
The United skipper left a moving tribute on Instagram yesterday, saying “Friend, colleague and comrade through many battles.
“It is difficult to understand how it is possible that someone could leave so soon.
“May you and your brother find the peace you need to look after those you lost so soon and suddenly.
“My condolences to your whole family.”
Everyone at The Peoples Person would also like to extend their condolences to his widow Rute, the children, parents Isabel and Joaquim and the whole family on their unfathomable loss.
