Bruno Fernandes registered his 18th Premier League assist of the season in Manchester United’s win over Chelsea
Bruno Fernandes has revealed his target as the Manchester United captain closes in on Premier League history.
Fernandes was instrumental as Man United beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday night, bouncing back from the shock defeat at home to Leeds at the beginning of the week.
Victory for Man Utd has put them ten points clear of the Blues with five games remaining, bolstering their hopes of a return to the Champions League.
The only goal of the game was scored late in the first half as Fernandes’ superb run and cross was finished off by Matheus Cunha, slightly against the run of play, to earn a valuable three points.
In creating the winning goal, Fernandes is now two assists away from surpassing the most assists in a single Premier League season
The record is 20, which currently held jointly by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry and former Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Fernandes said he is just focused on improving as a player when asked if he sets himself individual record.
He said: "I say every time I want to do better than the season before. I want to improve my game overall.
“I need to improve every week because I want to become a better player and end my career as the best as possible."
Man United head coach Michael Carrick heaped praise on Fernandes afterwards, praising the Portugal international’s leaderships skills.
“His impact has been immense for a period of time, he's carried that all the way through,” Carrick said. “He plays most games, he's fit, he's hungry.
“He had a big shift to do in the middle but he was willing to do that for the team. He's a big personality, he's the captain for a reason.
“Sometimes it's leading by example and showing the way. He's vocal, he's a big presence on the pitch. He's been a big part of this club over the last few years."
