Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Bryan Mbeumo have been honoured following their stunning displays in the 3-2 victory against Arsenal.
Continuing his dream start as interim manager, Michael Carrick orchestrated a tactical masterclass to sink Arsenal at the Emirates.
Arsenal seized the early initiative and went ahead shortly before the 30-minute mark, thanks to an unfortunate own goal from Lisandro Martinez. However, Mbeumo drew United level shortly after as he capitalised on a massive mistake by Martin Zubimendi.
Patrick Dorgu fired United ahead just after the interval, hammering a shot that crashed off the woodwork and into the net.
Mikel Merino thought he had rescued a point for the Gunners when he prodded home from a corner, but Matheus Cunha delivered the final, decisive blow.
Cunha shaped his body and bent a brilliant effort beyond the reach of a diving David Raya.
Plaudits have rolled in for Carrick and his players, and they’ve received another major recognition from Alan Shearer, who named Mbeumo and Maguire in his Team of the Week.
Central to United’s victory was a resolute defensive display, anchored by the solid partnership of Maguire and Martínez. The pair restricted Arsenal to scraps, with the hosts’ best goalscoring chances coming from set pieces.
On why he picked Maguire, Shearer wrote, “Again, he really stood up to the challenge against a top-two side.”
The former Premier League striker noted about Mbeumo, “Another energetic display and a great finish. Two goals in two games since AFCON.”
Shearer picked Carrick to lead his Team of the Week.
He said about Carrick, “Two matches in charge and he’s beaten Man City and now Arsenal. What a start.”
Carrick and his players will be looking to make it three wins in a row when they host Fulham at Old Trafford on Sunday.
