Matheus Cunha broke the deadlock for United in the 24th minute, producing a fine finish to open his goalscoring account for the Red Devils.

Casemiro made it 2-0 just 10 minutes later with a shot that was deflected into the back of the net. Mbeumo extended United’s advantage at the hour mark with a fine left-footed strike into the bottom corner.

Brighton threatened to mount a comeback, with Danny Welbeck and Charalampos Kostoulas scoring two late goals. However, an emphatic finish into the roof of the net from Mbeumo in the 97th minute of proceedings ensured that United sealed all three points.

Mbeumo has now notched five goals for United across all competitions. He has adapted effortlessly to life at the club, living up to the hefty investment United made to bring him in over the summer.

The Cameroonian’s heroics against Brighton have seen him named in WhoScored and the BBC’s Premier League Teams of the Week.

Mbeumo gets double nod

He is not the only United star who has been included in WhoScored’s Premier League Team of the Week. Mbeumo is joined in this XI by Cunha.

Statisticians, WhoScored, have given Mbeumo a rating of 9.16, while Cunha boasts a score of 8.31.

Mbeumo is the only United representative in Troy Deeney’s BBC Team of the Week.

On why he selected Mbeumo, Deeney pointed out, “I wanted to put Matheus Cunha in but Mbeumo got that second goal. You can see he’s found his feet now, he’s comfortable, the shirt is not a problem, playing at Manchester United is not a problem.”

“Him and Cunha are the reason they are going to be able to fly up the league. Both of them are talented, both of them are exceptional.”

“The two goals Mbeumo scored were magnificent. When it got a little bit ropey towards the end, that chance fell to him and I don’t think anyone thought he was going to miss. Huge from him, huge for Manchester United.”

United are back in action on Saturday when they face Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.
