After a tense 3-2 win in the DFB Pokal in midweek, Bayern Munich resumed its Bundesliga campaign against Sandro Wagner’s Augsburg

Bayern started the game as they had finished last weekend’s 6-0 win against RB Leipzig. The Bundesliga champions nearly opened the scoring within the first two minutes, but Luis Diaz somehow missed an open goal. A chance that was harder to miss than it was to score.

After this early chance, Augsburg were shaky in the opening stages of the game, but as the game went on, they grew into the game defensively, but would struggle on the attacking front.

Bayern would open the scoring in the 28th minute when a Harry Kane cross was met by the head of Serge Gnabry to make it 1-0. Just before half-time, Bayern would make it 2-0 when Diaz got his goal after converting a Konrad Laimer cutback.

In the second half, Bayern started just as quickly as they did in the first, and Michael Olise would make it 3-0 for the visitors.

However, in a similar scenario to midweek against Wehen Wiesbaden, Bayern fell asleep, and it allowed Augsburg to get one back and make it 3-1 through Kristijan Jakic. Augsburg would make it 3-2 twenty minutes later when a cross landed at the feet of Mert Kömür, whose shot, somehow, made its way through the bodies in the Bayern box.

Despite the late onslaught from Augsburg, Bayern were able to hold them off and secure their second win of the season.

Do Bayern Munich have defensive problems?

For the second time in a week, Bayern have struggled to maintain control of a game. Whether it is the constraints of having such a small squad, or them simply just switching off, something is simply not clicking.

There is no doubt in Bayern’s quality in going forward; they showed it again today, but the fact that they made it difficult for themselves should be a warning sign.

Sandro Wagner’s Augsburg:

Following their 3-0 win last weekend, there were question marks (from me), whether this was a one-off or Augsburg was the real deal. Forgetting the first 50 minutes of the game, then Sandro Wagner is building something interesting in the Fuggerstadt. You can see the idea that the former striker is trying to implement, but the only current area of concern may be the attack.

They are not creating enough. For example, today, they registered, via FotMob, ZERO big chances. Like last week, they also significantly overperformed their xG. This is an area that needs working on, as Augsburg are not taking advantage of its full potential.

Augsburg:

Finn Dahmen (7), Chrislain Matsima (6), Jeffrey Gouweleeuw (5), Keven Schlotterbeck (5), Marius Wold (5), Kristijan Jakic (6), Han-Noah Massengo (5), Dimitrios Giannoulis (5), Robin Fellhauer (5), Elias Saad (5), Mert Kömür (7)

Others: Elyis Rexhbecaj (5), Anton Kade (5), Phillip Tietz (5), Noahkai Banks (-)

Bayern Munich:

Manuel Neuer (5), Konrad Laimer (6), Jonathan Tah (5), Dayot Upamecano (5), Josip Stanisic (5), Joshua Kimmich (5), Leon Goretzka (5), Michael Olise (6), Serge Gnabry (6), Luis Diaz (6), Harry Kane (7)

Others: Sacha Boey (5), Aleksandar Pavlovic (5), Raphaël Guerreiro (-)

GGFN Man of the Match: Harry Kane (7)

Provided two assists today and led the game in chances created. Despite not getting on the score sheet, Kane was still effective. Due to the absence of Jamal Musiala and the arrival of Luis Diaz, it seems that in the opening few games, Kane’s role is changing from a more out-and-out striker to a more creative option.

Augsburg’s Mert Kömür also played a great game today. The 20-year-old led the Augsburg attack and was able to be effective in the second half, despite the minimal service.
