Newcastle United secured a valuable away victory at Turf Moor tonight, surviving a late Burnley fightback to claim three points that mattered far more than the performance.

Eddie Howe’s side struck twice inside the opening seven minutes before spending long periods under pressure, eventually sealing a 3-1 win that ended another anxious evening on the road.

The visitors stunned Burnley after just 65 seconds when Anthony Gordon escaped down the left and picked out Joelinton, who calmly steered the ball home for his first league goal in a year.

Burnley barely had time to regroup before Newcastle doubled their lead, with Yoane Wissa reacting quickest after a scramble in the area to convert from close range.

The early goals lifted the travelling support and briefly masked Newcastle’s away struggles, with five shots on target arriving inside the opening quarter-hour.

That control did not last, as Newcastle dropped deeper and allowed Burnley to grow into the contest.

The hosts responded with intensity and belief, and were rewarded when Josh Laurent volleyed in at the far post after Armando Broja’s flick-on caught the defence flat-footed.

Burnley carried that momentum through the remainder of the first half, forcing Nick Pope into action and relying on Fabian Schar’s goal-line clearance to keep Newcastle ahead.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Burnley pressing relentlessly and Newcastle struggling to regain composure in midfield.

Marcus Edwards drove at the back line and tested Pope, whose outstretched leg denied a leveller as the pressure continued to mount.

The home side came agonisingly close moments later when Laurent’s header struck the crossbar, prompting roars from a crowd that sensed a turning point.

Burnley’s energy eventually began to fade, with the sustained press taking its toll and offering Newcastle brief opportunities to relieve the pressure.

Jacob Murphy squandered a gilt-edged chance to settle the contest, while Malick Thiaw’s header was cleared off the line as nerves persisted.

Burnley manager Scott Parker threw on Ashley Barnes in search of a late equaliser, but the hosts could not find the decisive touch.

Newcastle finally secured the win in added time when a defensive mix-up gifted Bruno Guimaraes space, allowing him to chip home and end Burnley’s resistance.

The goal capped a performance defined by early ruthlessness and late resilience rather than control.

For Newcastle, it marked only their second away league win since mid-April and offered a timely boost amid concerns over their form on the road.

Burnley were left frustrated once more, having shown fight and commitment but again lacking the cutting edge needed to turn dominance into points.
