Burnley's decision to reward Luca Koleosho means they can command a big fee for him amid Bayern Munich interest.
There was a lot of criticism directed towards the Burnley hierarchy in the summer following their relegation from the Premier League.
With Vincent Kompany surprisingly coming on the radar of Bayern Munich, the club could do little to stop their head coach leaving, but the squad was then ripped apart as over a dozen first-team players moved on - and many of those left in the final weeks of the window.
Therefore, you can understand why fan frustration was boiling over, particularly as the squad does look light in certain areas, despite the positive results under Scott Parker.
However, it wasn’t all bad news for the Clarets, as they did manage to keep hold of the influential Luca Koleosho, who was on the radar of Wolves.
A hefty price tag meant Wanderers backed off, and, to their credit, Burnley then reached an agreement over a new contract with their exciting winger, who put pen to paper in September on a deal that runs until 2029.
Since then, even with the transfer window not yet open, interest in Koleosho has continued to grow.
Reports have claimed that Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest are among a host of clubs monitoring the Italian youth international, but, perhaps more worryingly, Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenburg has revealed that Bayern Munich are keen.
Given the size of the Bundesliga leaders, it will be difficult to stand in Koleosho’s way if he wants a reunion with Kompany, so if they formalise their interest with an offer, things could move swiftly.
But, it’s not all bad news for Burnley, as the new deal for Koleosho means they should be in a position to get a substantial fee that reflects the ability and potential of their star man.
For a club that relies on player trading, which is becoming increasingly important in the modern game, it's imperative that Burnley extract every pound possible when they sell, and Koleosho is the prized asset right now.
The days of the bigger clubs bullying others in the market are long gone, and whilst Burnley will accept that Koleosho would want to move to Munich, they can now ensure it happens on their terms.
Realistically, the update indicates that Bayern will not pursue Koleosho, or any other winger, until the summer, so there’s not going to be much panic at Turf Moor about losing the attacker in January.
Obviously, whether they win promotion or not will also be crucial in determining what sort of fee they could command for the player, and there may be release clauses as part of his contract - we don’t know.
In an ideal world for Burnley, they will win promotion to the Premier League, which would give Koleosho more incentive to stay. Yet, even if he did want to go, they would be able to receive a sum that would exceed the £40m they supposedly wanted from Wolves a matter of months ago.
Of course, there’s a lot of football to be played over the rest of the season, and Koleosho’s form will dictate the level of interest in him.
Nevertheless, he is on Bayern Munich’s radar, and they tend to get the players they want in the market if they make a move.
From Burnley’s perspective, they know keeping Koleosho will be extremely difficult if an offer materialises, but their shrewd move to reward the youngster with a new deal means they will once again be able to stand up to Bayern Munich if negotiations start.
