Burnley’s attempts to sign Cole Palmer prior to his move to Chelsea have been revealed.

According to Alan Nixon, the Clarets’ are left to regret not pushing harder to sign the playmaker last summer following their promotion to the Premier League.

Palmer made the switch to Chelsea at the end of the 2023 summer transfer window, and has become a household name and an England international off the back of his impressive performances in that time.

The 22-year-old contributed 22 goals and 11 assists in the top flight last year as the Blues finished sixth in the table (all stats from Fbref).

Palmer has already scored six and assisted four this season, with Enzo Maresca’s side chasing a top four finish, while Burnley are back in the Championship.

Vincent Kompany was reportedly keen on raiding his old club’s academy system to sign Palmer from Manchester City, either on loan or on a permanent basis.

It has been claimed that the Lancashire outfit were working on a deal for quite some time, with the player taking his time to make a decision on whether to accept a move to Turf Moor.

However, it is understood that by the time he decided to make the switch, Chelsea jumped in at the last minute to win his signature.

The rest is now history, but Burnley will be kicking themselves for having missed out on such a talent after the incredible rise to fame he’s enjoyed over the last 12 months.

The Clarets did sign James Trafford from Man City last summer, but he hasn’t quite reached the same kind of heights as Palmer, and there’s only so much impact a good goalkeeper can have compared to someone contributing to 33 league goals in one campaign.

It has been reported that one source has said, via Alan Nixon: “We spent weeks, maybe months on Cole.

“By the time he was convinced, Chelsea were on the scene, and we lost out.”

Burnley league position

Burnley are now under the management of Scott Parker, with their sights set on an immediate return back to the top flight.

A 0-0 draw against Preston North End on Saturday afternoon saw them drop to third in the Championship table.

The gap to league leaders Sunderland is just one point after only nine games, but everything is still tight at the top in these early stages.

Next up for Burnley will be a trip to face Sheffield Wednesday on 19 October following the upcoming international break.

Missing out on Palmer is a huge ‘what if?’ scenario for Burnley.

If they had managed to secure even just a loan move then perhaps he could’ve been the difference between staying up and their eventual 19th place finish under Kompany.

While it’s unlikely he would’ve scored or assisted quite so many goals, someone of his talent still could’ve really excelled for the Clarets as a standout player.
