Veerle Buurman was the unlikely match-winner as Chelsea battled to a 2-1 victory against Tottenham Hotspur to book an FA Cup semi-final place.

The hosts went into this game looking to bounce back from their Champions League exit to Arsenal while Spurs were hoping to end a three-game losing streak.

It was Chelsea who took the lead just before the break. There has been plenty of talk about Sam Kerr's future this week but she showed why she is still such a deadly finisher as she headed in from Keira Walsh's ball.

However, Spurs responded well and equalised seven minutes into the second half. Eveliina Summanen whipped in a freekick from the left that evaded everyone and that goalkeeper Hannah Hampton misjudged with the ball eventually finding the net.

While Hampton looked far from her best her opposite number, Lize Kop, needed to react quickly when soon after Amanda Nildén's back pass played Kerr through but Kop managed to keep the scores level.

Spurs had their moments to take the lead but it was Chelsea who struck first. Veerle Buurman hadn't scored since arriving at Chelsea and she may not net a better one. The Dutch defender picked up the ball from outside the area, gave herself space and then rifled an effort past compatriot Kop.

The visitors almost levelled it up to force the game into extra-time late on but Cathinka Tandberg just dragged her shot wide.

That result means that Chelsea are still on for a domestic cup double with one more FA Cup quarter-final still to be played when Birmingham City face league leaders Manchester City.
