“Calm down! Relax!” – Why Gary Neville told Enzo Maresca off after penalty shout

Things are going well for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where they lead Liverpool 1-0.

But despite that Enzo Maresca has been close to the end of his tether. He argued with a Liverpool coach in the wake of a penalty which was denied to his team. Alejandro Garnacho went around Dominik Szoboszlai and was then held back a little by the midfielder, who also gave him a little nudge. The VAR decided there wasn’t enough to justify a penalty.

Maresca loses his cool – Neville not happy

Gary Neville speaks on Sky Sports.

On Sky Sports’ commentary, Gary Neville was not happy with the Chelsea boss’s behaviour on the touchline, which earned him a booking from the fourth official

“I know sometimes the VAR get it wrong, but it’s not a penalty. Calm down, relax,” the Sky pundit said.

“I don’t know who’s telling him it’s a penalty but it’s the wrong information.”

In reality it probably wasn’t a penalty – in fact Garnacho was lucky to not get booked for diving. He made the most of it, but there was a touch. This was the fairest call. It certainly wasn’t one worth arguing over from the manager’s point of view.

BBC note Maresca faces ban with one more card

Nizaar Kinsella of the BBC also noted the incident, plus the potential consequences.

“Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca was booked by referee Anthony Taylor for a row with Arne Slot’s goalkeeper coach Xavi Valero,” Kinsella wrote on their live text.

“It followed the aftermath of the Alejandro Garnacho penalty shout. That’s his second booking of the season and another will see him earn a touchline ban.”

Given Maresca is currently trying to enforce some maturity and discipline on his squad as they continue their record as the most carded team in the league, this is not a great look.
