Manchester United secured a 2-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday in the Premier League, which was Ruben Amorim’s 50th game in charge of the club.
The Portuguese head coach has registered 19 wins and 19 defeats since arriving at the Theatre of Dreams last November. After finishing 15th in the Premier League last season, the former Sporting manager invested heavily in the attack, bringing in Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, and Matheus Cunha.
Both Sesko and Mbeumo have scored two goals each so far, while Cunha has impressed as well. Unfortunately, the Red Devils have won just three of their eight games this season.
It is believed that the team still needs a new midfielder, and the position is expected to be a priority for Amorim in 2026, with multiple names already being linked for the job.
United were also linked with midfield reinforcements this summer, as they attempted to lay down succession plans for Casemiro.
Carlos Baleba was reportedly high up on Amorim’s agenda, but Brighton & Hove Albion refused to consider any offer for the Cameroonian midfielder.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils were also linked with Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Angelo Stiller. Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga was reportedly an option as well for Amorim, but none of those moves materialised.
Casemiro also ended up staying at Old Trafford, although his contract expires at the end of this season. The Brazilian has started five of the seven games in the Premier League this campaign, signifying the need for a new defensive midfielder.
Recent reports have suggested that the Red Devils remain hot on the heels of Camavinga. It now appears that the Frenchman could become available next year.
According to a report from Fichajes, Real Madrid are ready to part ways with Camavinga. The French midfielder hasn’t lived up to expectations since moving to Los Blancos from Rennes in the summer of 2021.
Injuries have hampered his growth with the La Liga giants, who have now run out of patience. Camavinga missed a chunk of the 2024/25 campaign with injuries, registering 35 appearances across competitions.
This season, the Frenchman has managed just 76 minutes of first team action from five appearances, all of which were from the bench. The report adds that Manchester City are ready to offer €60m for the 22 year old in 2026, which Real Madrid are willing to accept.
The two clubs are already in contact regarding the matter, which will be bad news for United. Despite considerable interest in Camavinga’s signature, Los Blancos would reportedly prefer to do business with City.
There’s a chance that the Frenchman could be part of a bigger deal between the two clubs, and a move could even materialise at the turn of the year.
