Cameron Bragg’s resurgence under Tonda Eckert has given Southampton a midfield dimension. The head coach’s faith has unlocked a passer who lifts Saints’ wingers higher up the pitch.

His breakthrough came in the away win at Charlton Athletic, setting aside the Blackburn Rovers disaster. A cameo in the first of three wins over Leicester City was followed by a start away at Millwall, and though the result went against Saints he impressed.

After Christmas cameos, Eckert restored him to the New Year’s Day XI and he was the game’s standout. He then scored his first goal for Saints at Doncaster in the FA Cup third round.

That rise felt unlikely after a loan at Crawley under Rob Eliott, where he made eight starts and four substitute appearances. Confidence was low and his summer pathway looked uncertain.

"The plan in the summer was really unclear. It could have gone either way. I couldn't control all of that. I was disappointed after the window, but Tonda and the staff were unbelievable with me."

Injury has checked his momentum and Shea Charles’s return has tightened competition, but that will come. With bids reportedly prepared for Caspar Jander and with Oriol Romeu’s contract unlikely to be extended, his path to starts could be clearer, and he may grow into a number ten in the Azaz role.
