FC Barcelona have a number of players on their shortlist to replace Robert Lewandowski next season. The Pole is in the final few months of his contract at the club and, at 37, is unlikely to receive an extension.
Barcelona’s shortlist of new strikers includes experienced, seasoned names like Harry Kane and younger developmental bets like Karl Etta Eyong. The Cameroonian striker has been making waves in La Liga for Levante this season.
Barcelona were linked with a move for the 22-year-old in the summer, when he was at Villarreal, but Levante won the race. So far this season, he has scored six goals and provided three assists in 12 La Liga games.
Speaking about the player, Cameroon national football team coach Marc Brys offered high praise. As quoted by Mundo Deportivo, he said:
“He is a very good player. Very modest and humble, which is a gift. He is not an egocentric striker; he plays for the team. I like that: he works hard, creates space for others to exploit. He played a match with us and did well, even though he didn’t score.”
“He was an important reinforcement for the group. He has a good heart, is polite, without negative attitudes. That makes him special. He must continue growing, integrate more, but he has the potential to score many goals. He has already shown it, although he has not yet reached his maximum level. We would like to continue working with him because he can keep growing and go far.
Subsequently, Brys was asked whether he thinks Etta Eyong has what it takes to play for Barcelona. He replied:
I think with his potential, yes. In a team, there is always space for a new player if he has the right qualities. Look at Lamine Yamal: a few years ago, no one thought he would play for the first team, and now he is fundamental. Etta also has that potential. He is dangerous, unpredictable, and can surprise anyone. That is valuable for any big team.
If Barcelona want to go down the developmental striker route to replace Lewandowski, there is no bigger sensation for the club to target at the moment than Etta Eyong. It helps that he has already adapted to La Liga.
Everything points to Barcelona being heavily invested in how the 22-year-old develops over the course of the season. Only time will tell how things play out.
