FC Barcelona supporters got another glimpse this week of what the club’s future home is becoming. During the Champions League night against Newcastle, the football was only part of the attraction, because the stadium itself also offered a visible sign that the rebuild is moving into a new phase.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the third tier is now clearly taking shape and the upper block is nearing completion. The report says the concrete work is practically finished across that section, with only a small stretch above Gol Sud still pending.
That matters because this is no longer a project fans have to imagine from architectural images alone. It is now visible in the structure, especially after the club received the 1C licence from Barcelona City Council to occupy the newly built stand in the Gol Nord area.
The article adds that the current capacity has reached 62,652 spectators, which already changes the matchday feel inside the ground. It even allowed the stadium to produce a full wave during the Newcastle game, which was a beautiful sight.
At the same time, the lower part of Gol Sud has opened the area that will permanently house the Gol 1957 singing section, named in tribute to the stadium’s original inauguration year. That gives the redevelopment a Barca identity beyond steel and concrete.
It feels good to see the renovated Camp Nou take shape. The atmosphere against Newcastle United was a thing of beauty, and one can only imagine how much better it could become once full capacity is in place. We will have to wait and see how long it takes Barcelona to reach that stage.
