CAN 2025: Nigeria braces for a severe penalty!

CAN 2025, Nigeria: a heavy sanction looming!
Nigeria is facing an unexpected crisis just weeks before the Africa Cup of Nations. After a dramatic penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo in the 2026 World Cup playoff final, the Super Eagles’ elimination was marred by chaotic scenes at the final whistle. Tensions flared as Eric Chelle sparked a major incident, accusing the Congolese camp of witchcraft and even alleging the use of voodoo rituals during the penalty shootout. The situation escalated so quickly that Sébastien Desabre had to intervene on the spot to restore calm. Footage of the incident has spread across the continent, and the fallout could be costly for the Nigerian head coach.
Realizing the magnitude of the backlash, Eric Chelle tried to defuse the situation by retracting his accusations. On Instagram, he spoke about the emotional intensity of the moment: “Football is above all about emotions. After the match, I reacted strongly to an altercation… I never intended to target the Congolese people or their staff, whom I respect.” Despite this public mea culpa, the consequences are expected to be severe.
Journalist Osasu Obayiuwana believes Chelle could face a hefty fine, or even a touchline or stadium ban. Worse still, Nigeria might have to start the CAN group stage without their head coach, especially in key matches against Tanzania and Tunisia. This controversy only deepens the wounds of a team already reeling from failure and now thrust into the heart of a disciplinary storm.
