Latest news from Bayern

Bayern have won all four of their games in 2026 by an aggregate score of 18-3. As well as opening up an 11-point lead over Borussia Dortmund in second place, the Reds also ensured a top-eight finish and automatic progress to the round of 16 in the Champions League thanks to Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise. Bayern have been at their most impressive in the second half of games since the winter break, stepping up several gears after sometimes tight first periods. Kompany, though, does not see that as a weakness but more a sign of consistency. “If the opponent is fresh in the first 45 minutes and does all they can for their game plan, then it’s not easy sometimes. But when you’re physically strong in the second half, that’s ideal,” the Belgian stated at Friday’s press conference.

Read up on the facts ahead of the game:

Kompany is again expecting an intense encounter against Augsburg where the opposition will give all they’ve got. “They’ll have plans and believe in their chance. Playing against us is like a cup final for some teams. We don’t want to give anything away. The motivation is fully there. We don’t distinguish between Augsburg or Leipzig. We want to perform at the highest level no matter who we face,” the 39-year-old added.

Opponent: Augsburg

Augsburg parted company with Sandro Wagner, who had only taken over in the summer, after picking up just 10 points from their first 12 games this season. Manuel Baum has since returned to the helm, following a stint between 2016 and 2019, earning six points from his first six fixtures. They have drawn their last two outings against Union Berlin (1-1) and Freiburg (2-2) to sit 15th in the table, just three points above Heidenheim in the play-off spot. “We need to play to our strengths, being compact, getting stuck into challenges, disrupting their rhythm and being brave in transition. You don’t have much time to think against Bayern. Lots of things need to be intuitive, because once they find their flow, it’s tough,” the Augsburg boss explained.

Team news

As well as the injured Josip Stanišić (ankle) and Konrad Laimer (calf), Sacha Boey and Dayot Upamecano are also both out with illness. However, Nicolas Jackson was back in training on Friday after returning from Senegal’s victorious Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

Augsburg are missing centre-back trio Jeffrey Gouweleeuw (knee), Chrislain Matsima (thigh) and Noah Banks (suspended). Midfielder Kristijan Jakić is also a doubt with a calf issue.
