Can Bayern rescue their European campaign at the San Siro?

Bayern Munich head to San Siro on Wednesday night with the task of overturning a 2-1 first-leg deficit against one of the most in-form sides in Europe.

Inter Milan have won five consecutive Champions League matches and remain unbeaten in their last 14 at home in the competition. For Bayern, who have stuttered in Europe of late, the odds appear stacked against them.

Yet this tie is not beyond them. Despite being second-best for large parts of the first leg, Bayern still created openings and showed glimpses of what they are capable of.

The late winner from Davide Frattesi was a blow, but not a knockout punch. With the away goals rule no longer a factor, a one-goal win is enough to force extra time.

Bayern’s record against Inter in Milan is flawless – four wins from four visits, all without conceding. That history will offer some belief, even if this Inter side is not easily fazed.

Simone Inzaghi’s team are organised, ruthless in transition, and playing with the confidence of Serie A champions-elect. Their ambitions are not limited to this tie; they are dreaming of a second treble.

Still, Bayern’s squad is packed with experience, and players like Harry Kane were brought in for nights like this.

The England striker remains positive despite the setback. “We are convinced that we can turn the result around,” Kane said earlier today. “We have to play better than we did in the first leg, and in a more clinical way.”

Vincent Kompany struck a similar tone in his pre-match press conference. “The belief is there,” the Bayern boss said. “Ultimately, we just have to win one game. Hopefully, we can experience a very special night for our fans.”

That belief will need to be matched by quality on the pitch. Bayern were punished for their lack of control in the first leg, with Inter exploiting gaps in midfield and defence.

Kompany’s men must tighten up and offer more fluency in attack. Their best spell in Munich came in the final stages, but by then the damage had already been done.

This is Bayern’s biggest test of the season, and possibly their best chance to rescue a disappointing European campaign.

With pressure mounting on Kompany and questions lingering over the club’s direction, a win in Milan could change the mood entirely. The challenge is huge, but Bayern are not without a chance.
