Can Newcastle Get Their First Away Win at Everton?

Everton host Newcastle this weekend in a Saturday night fixture under the lights at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Both teams have been vying for greater things in the last few seasons with Newcastle the only ones to trouble the Premier League elite.

On paper, recent meetings have been tight affairs with only one-goal enough to settle their matches. And this season, so far, David Moyes’ Everton are closer to challenging for a top spot than Eddie Howe’s men.

Both sides enter the match buoyed by momentum. Newcastle defeated Manchester City, who looked poised to and could still challenge Arsenal for the title before being stunned at St. James’ Park.

Everton’s defeat of 10-man Manchester United has quickly become the most talked-about moment of the season so far. The game is poised nicely with both teams separated by only three  points and boasting the same goal tallies, at 13.

Newcastle’s Black & White Form

Newcastle’s hopes are shrouded in concern despite this brilliant win. After another loss in the Champions League to Marseille, their season so far really has been black and white when comparing their home and away form.

They remain winless away from St James’ Park, scoring only three times and conceding five times. Despite this, belief remains strong in Howe, whose leadership guided Newcastle out of a similarly rough start during their successful Champions League qualification push in the 2022/23 campaign.

Hill Dickinson a Comfortable Home

Everton, meanwhile, look more comfortable at home with three wins, two draws and one loss. After a string of bad performances in October they have turned it around with two wins on the bounce, collecting seven points from a possible nine in November.

In-form man Jack Grealish has particular success against the Magpies. Against no club does he have more Premier League assists than he has against Newcastle (four). The Man City loanee also has the joint-most assists of any player in the top flight this season (four) and he is expected to retain his starting spot on the left for the Toffees.

Everton midfielder Gueye slapped teammate Keane in the face on Monday night, a move that was defended by David Moise, so of course will be suspended on Saturday night. He joins the injured players; Branthwaite, Rohl, Patterson and Seamus Coleman on the sideline.

Magpies Magic Pair

Harvey Barnes is the man in form for Newcastle after netting twice against City last weekend in seven minutes. He currently sits as Newcastle’s top scorer in all competitions with seven goals. Summer signing Nick Woltemade has looked promising so far, sat just behind Barnes with six goals in all competitions for Newcastle. These will be the key men for Newcastle who will desperately need a cutting edge against an Everton team that are happy to sit back and absorb pressure.

Tripper is the most notable of current injuries with Howe stating:  “He [Trippier] had a scan on his hamstring and we think it’s about a month, give or take.” This comes as a blow for the Magpies as it is worse than previously feared. However, positive news has also emerged that $72.8 million signing Yoane Wissa has trained with the team after his injury in September stopped him making his debut.

This game promises to be a tight affair, where crucial momentum is up for grabs for two teams that have bigger aspirations than the mid-pack this season.
