The ultimate underdog story has finally reached the sport’s biggest stage. The Cape Verde World Cup squad is full of history makers ready to travel from the Atlantic to the Americas for the first time ever to play in the FIFA World Cup. Here are the 26 men who are ready to write a new chapter for African soccer on the biggest stage.

A Team That Deserves All The Plaudits

Cape Verde definitively secured their spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Eswatini back in October 2025. The scenes in Praia back then were pure cinema. The smallest country by land area and the second least populated to qualify for the World Cup. With only half a million residents, the island of Cape Verde sits quietly nestled off the west coast of Africa.

The expanded FIFA World Cup has come as a boon to many of these hopeful countries, defining African soccer’s recent renaissance. The Cape Verde World Cup squad consists of players groomed in Europe’s most demanding leagues and grounded by a core of veterans who have bled for this crest for over a decade.

Before looking at the roster, one must give flowers to the man who masterminded it all. Head coach Pedro Brito, affectionately known as Bubista, took the reins in 2020 and has completely transformed the team since.

During the CAF Group D qualifiers, Bubista’s Cape Verde stunned the continent by finishing top of a group that included traditional heavyweight Cameroon. They amassed seven wins, two draws, and a solitary loss, scoring 16 goals and conceding just eight to qualify automatically for the FIFA World Cup.

Cape Verde World Cup Squad: The Goalkeepers

Vozinha, the 39-year-old goalkeeper, is one of the most experienced players in the Cape Verde World Cup squad and a spiritual leader of the Blue Sharks. Having been a mainstay of the national team through near-misses in previous qualifying campaigns, his presence in the squad is a necessity and, in some ways, a poetic reward. Vozinha’s shot-stopping remains sharp, but it is his organizational skills and booming voice from the back that Bubista relies upon.

He is backed up by Márcio da Rosa, who brings experience from the Bulgarian league, and the young Carlos Santos, who will feel right at home representing Cape Verde on American soil, where he plays for MLS side San Diego FC.

Cape Verde World Cup Squad: The Defenders

Cape Verde’s defense is a fascinating mix of players based all over the world. The standout name is undoubtedly Logan Costa. The Villarreal center-back has been a revelation in La Liga, offering great aerial dominance and the composure to play out from the back under pressure. He will likely be partnered with Ireland-born Roberto “Pico” Lopes. Lopes, who plies his trade for Shamrock Rovers, is a cult hero among the Cape Verdean faithful. His no-nonsense, abrasive style is the perfect style to pair with Costa’s elegance.

On the flanks, Bubista has opted for immense attacking thrust. Steven Moreira of the Columbus Crew brings MLS Cup-winning pedigree and an engine that allows him to shuttle up and down the right flank relentlessly. Meanwhile, Benfica’s Sidny Lopes Cabral offers a genuine attacking threat from deep, capable of delivering pinpoint crosses on the overlap.

A special mention must go to the 37-year-old veteran Stopira. When his name was announced for the final 26, reports emerged that his Torreense teammates nearly tore the locker room doors off their hinges in celebration.

Cape Verde World Cup Squad: The Midfield

If there is one area where Cape Verde might look to overachieve, it is in the middle of the park. The midfield must be incredibly disciplined, especially given the caliber of opposition in Group H. Jamiro Monteiro is the veteran string-puller. Operating primarily as an advanced 8 or a 10, the PEC Zwolle man possesses the vision to unlock defenses with a single pass.

The physical burden will fall largely on Kevin Pina and the Duarte brothers, Deroy and Laros. Pina, playing in Russia with Krasnodar, is a traditional destroyer, a tough-tackling anchor whose primary job will be to screen the defense of Costa and Lopes. The Duarte brothers offer incredible mobility, capable of pressing intensely and recycling possession efficiently. Telmo Arcanjo is the wildcard. The Vitória Guimarães midfielder brings a dynamic, box-to-box energy that could prove crucial when legs tire in the unforgiving North American summer heat.

Cape Verde World Cup Squad: The Attack

The attacking corps is where Bubista’s counter-attacking philosophy truly comes to life. Captain Ryan Mendes is the talisman. The Iğdır winger dictates the culture of the squad and remains the most technically gifted player on the roster. Even in the twilight of his career, Mendes’ ability to cut inside and create chaos is unmatched within the national setup.

However, the breakout star to watch is Dailon Livramento. The Casa Pia forward was the undisputed hero of the qualifying campaign, netting four crucial goals.

He will be supported by a terrifying array of wide players. Jovane Cabral and Hélio Varela are explosive wingers who love to isolate defenders one-on-one. The return of 35-year-old Garry Rodrigues adds a layer of experience and a certain romanticism to the squad.

The FIFA World Cup Group H

Cape Verde’s reward for their historic qualification is a placement in Group H, definitely one of the hardest groups to crack. A group that consists of Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia.

If the Blue Sharks can emerge from the first two matches with their goal difference intact, or miraculously snatch a point, the showdown in Texas against Saudi Arabia could become a decider for a spot in the knockout stages.

Cape Verde are preparing hard for the World Cup. They will be spending some time in Portugal as part of their training camp in the month of May. On May 31, at the Restelo Stadium in Lisbon, Cape Verde will face Serbia in an international friendly. Following that, the squad will cross the Atlantic for a final friendly against Bermuda in the United States, allowing the players to acclimatize to the time zones and climate just days before the June 11 tournament kickoff.

As the second-smallest nation by land area to ever qualify for the tournament, the Blue Sharks are already in the history books. To get out of the group they are in, they will have to do the miracle again, just like they did in the qualifiers. The world is about to find out what African soccer fans have probably known for years: never underestimate the Blue Sharks.
