Fabio Capello has commented once again on AC Milan’s elimination from the Champions League, and what the struggles of Serie A clubs in Europe means.

Milan’s European journey came to an end on Tuesday night in a rather shocking fashion as they drew 1-1 with Feyenoord at San Siro, which meant that they lost 2-1 on aggregate.

However, it wasn’t the only bit of disappointment related to Italian clubs. Atalanta were hammered by Club Brugge and exited, while Juventus went out to PSV Eindhoven after an extra-time goal.

After some positive seasons when the likes of Milan, Inter, Atalanta, Roma and Napoli went deep in European competitions, there is a real risk of losing out on that fifth Champions League spot.

Capello gave an interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport in which he commented on what has been a very difficult week for Italian sides in the top club competition, with his thoughts relayed by MilanPress.

“We have had proof that our Serie A suffers from the high pace of European football. From this point of view, our league seems to have taken a step back, after having grown in 2023-24,” he said.

“Ibrahimovic was right, the Rossoneri committed suicide with that madness of Theo Hernandez. But allow me to add that even when numerically inferior, the match could have been read better by Conceicao. I, for example, would never have taken out the centre-forward Gimenez.”
