Carabao Cup 'the perfect time' to rest Haaland - Guardiola
Premier League leaders Arsenal will play Crystal Palace in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after Oliver Glasner’s side knocked out Liverpool in the fourth round.
Palace thumped the league champions 3-0 as Arne Slot’s heavily rotated side found themselves outplayed at Anfield, in what was Liverpool’s sixth defeat in seven games.
League One Cardiff City, the only side left in the competition from outside the Premier League, will host Chelsea, Manchester City will entertain Brentford, while Newcastle United will take on Fulham at St James’ Park.
The quarter-final fixtures are set to take place during the week commencing Monday 15 December with most matches kicking off on the evening of Tuesday 16 December or Wednesday 17 December.
So, another disappointing night for Liverpool but Arne Slot stood by his team selection after the game.
The Reds boss made 10 changes and left star players out of the squad, leading to a sixth defeat in seven matches as Palace won 3-0 but does not regret his choice to prioritise the upcoming run of fixtures.
“It’s always a blow to lose a game of football, especially if it leads to going out of a competition,” explained Slot. “But it’s the same selection I did tonight as I did last season in rounds like this.
“There are many reasons maybe why we’ve lost six out of seven. None of them are good enough to accept losing so many.
“I can come up with arguments or reasons but none of them will be enough to go to that standard because at Liverpool losing five out of six, six out of seven is always too much.
“In two days we play Villa. The last time I played a player that we thought was ready for that programme, it turned out maybe that he wasn’t. It was Alexander Isak when he went out with an injury.”

Tottenham fell behind at Newcastle with 24 minutes gone when Fabian Schar met Sandro Tonali's corner – which was delayed by Djed Spence tying his bootlaces – with a firm downward header, prompting ultimately futile protests from the visitors that the defender had not been allowed to get back into position.
"Always disappointing to lose, always disappointing to go out of the tournament that we would love to progress in,” the Spurs manager said.
"Small margins decided the game tonight - it was a very even game with chances and situations in both boxes. The two goals were also small margins where there was two mistakes.
"One [mistake] unfortunately from [referee] Chris Kavanagh, in terms of things you need to give. Djed Spence had his boot off - he needs time to tie his boot and he didn't. His marker, Schar, scored. I have spoken to Chris about it, and we will keep that between Chris and I."
