Former Sunderland midfielder Carl Robinson has emerged among the frontrunners for the vacant St Mirren job.

The Scottish Sun reports that the 49-year-old, who made 57 Sunderland appearances from 2004 to 2006 and won 52 Wales caps, is on the shortlist to take up the Scottish Premiership role.

Robinson has been without a managerial post since leaving Western Sydney Wanderers in 2022. He is currently assistant coach at MLS side Atlanta United and works in coach education for the Welsh FA. He is eager to return to management.

St Mirren began their search after manager Stephen Robinson left for Aberdeen earlier this month. It has been a difficult league campaign, the Buddies sit 10th with 24 points from 30 games. With Livingston bottom on 15 points with one win, relegation looks highly unlikely.

They did lift the Scottish League Cup for only the second time in their history in December, beating Celtic 3-1 at Hampden Park. Other candidates under consideration include Neil Lennon, Simo Valakari, Gary Naismith, Mark Wilson and former Dundee coach Tony Docherty.

Before the Premiership split, St Mirren face Falkirk away, Aberdeen at home and Celtic away. They also meet Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final on 18th April. If appointed in time, Robinson could quickly find himself chasing further silverware.
