Manchester United are expected to focus on midfield reinforcements in 2026, after failing to strengthen the position this summer.
The middle of the park is fast becoming the Achilles heel of Ruben Amorim’s system. The Portuguese head coach’s 3-4-3 formation requires an athletic No. 6 who can help the likes of Bruno Fernandes flourish.
This is perhaps why the English giants were keen to sign Carlos Baleba this summer. The Red Devils reportedly enquired about the Cameroonian’s availability, but Brighton & Hove Albion refused to entertain any talk of his departure.
Five games into the new season, the decision not to sign a new midfielder has come back to haunt Amorim.
United have invested heavily in a new look attack, with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko all added to Amorim’s kitty over the summer.
However, with the engine room still rusty, the frontline is yet to get going this season.
It is no wonder that the Red Devils are sitting in 14th place in the Premier League table, having won just one of their first four games. They have also scored just four goals in the league so far.
Recent reports have suggested that the fallen English giants are ready to go all out to solve their midfield conundrum next year, with Carlos Baleba the priority target for the job.
However, it now appears that Liverpool are ready to pour cold water over their plans.
According to IndyKaila News, Liverpool are planning to sign Carlos Baleba at the turn of the year.
The Reds reportedly had their eyes on the 21 year old in the summer as well, but opted against a move as Brighton didn’t want to let him go.
The Merseyside club, however, believe that the situation will change in January and are ready to take advantage.
Babela was reportedly ready to join United in the summer, but the move never materialised. The Red Devils can only hope that the Cameroonian will turn down their bitter rivals and opt for a move to the Theatre of Dreams instead in 2026.
