Carrick left ‘baffled’ by referee in Man Utd’s draw with Bournemouth

Michael Carrick says he was left “a bit baffled” by the referee’s failure to award Amad a penalty in Manchester United’s draw with Bournemouth.

Having been awarded an earlier penalty when Matheus Cunha went down in the box under a challenge from Alex Jimenez, Carrick was left frustrated by the referee’s decision not to award another for what he felt were similar offences.

“He’s definitely got one of them wrong, because he’s given one penalty for us for the same thing that he’s not given one,” Carrick said.

“There’s a two-arm grab, so the Matheus one he gives, the second one on Amad he doesn’t, which I think is almost identical, really.

“Two hands on someone in the box and they go over and they’re in control of the ball. For me, it’s two penalties, but it’ll be interesting to see which one he acknowledges wrong, whether the one that we got or the one that we didn’t get.

“It’s a huge moment, you don’t give it, they go down the other end and score, and then it becomes all of a sudden, it needs to be a bigger penalty to overturn just because they scored, when actually it’s a penalty and it should be a penalty if you’ve already given one. So, a bit baffling, really, to make sense of that.”

The decision not to award the penalty became more controversial when Bournemouth went up the other end and equalised through Ryan Christie.

United went back ahead through a James Hill own goal, before Harry Maguire conceded a penalty and was given a straight red card for bringing down Evanilson, with Junior Kroupi scoring from the spot.

“I’ve not seen the actual instance back,” Carrick said on Maguire’s red card. “But listen, if he’s gone past him and he’s clean through on goal and he’s put an arm on him, then he’s given a penalty for that.

“If he’s put an arm on Amad, he doesn’t give a penalty for that, again, that’s what’s happened… so, it is what it is. I thought we coped with that really well, as I’ve said, so I think I’d rather take the positive from it tonight than that.”
