The court case involving Benfica, Vitória de Setúbal and Luís Filipe Vieira has been adjourned with no new date set.
According to Glorioso 1904, the instruction phase was due to begin on Monday, 23 March, but the court said conditions were not met and adjourned proceedings. The postponement is understood to relate to a failure to notify one defendant, who therefore did not attend.
The case stems from emails released by Porto in recent years, which led to allegations of attempted corruption by Benfica’s SAD, then led by Luís Filipe Vieira, who is among those named by the Ministério Público.
The Ministério Público has brought charges of active corruption, undue offer and qualified fraud. In the dock are the Benfica and Vitória de Setúbal SADs, along with Luís Filipe Vieira and Paulo Gonçalves, former president and legal adviser at Benfica, among others.
Prosecutors are also asking the court to suspend Benfica from all Portuguese competitions for six months to three years, in addition to any individual sentences.
