It was a fourth win on the trot for Manchester United as they defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 on Saturday afternoon. After the visitors went a man down due to a red card, Manchester United were determined to make their numerical advantage count, continuously bombarding the Tottenham Hotspur defence throughout the contest.
Ultimately, it was Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes who got their names on the scoresheet, but there was another surprising star who turned heads with his phenomenal performance on the day.
When Casemiro was fouled in a most reckless way by Christian Romero, his teammates seemed to be in panic mode, unsure of whether he would continue. Not only did the Brazilian rise to his feet, but he went on to produce one of his most impactful performances of the season.
Even before the foul, the Brazilian proved impactful, taking a thunderous shot from long range to force a save by the goalkeeper. He also came close to scoring later in the first half, sprinting forward to get his head to a corner cross from Bryan Mbeumo, only for his effort to breeze wide.
Still, it was not only the Brazilian’s shooting that caught the eye.
Casemiro got an impressive three shots on target, with another shot being blocked. His passing was immaculate, with 60 of 71 passes finding their mark for an 85% total accuracy.
The midfielder also made two key passes. What’s more, Casemiro showed great confidence with the ball at his feet, making 16 carries.
While his physicality was not at its peak, winning just two of six ground duels, Casemiro made a great defensive effort. He made a total of four defensive actions, namely two interceptions, one tackle, and one blocked shot.
Although Casemiro is set to leave the club at the end of the season, this performance showed just how much he intends to leave the club on a positive note, making the most of the time he has left at Old Trafford.
While the team will no doubt be in need of a replacement in the summer, at least they can rest assured that the veteran midfielder can remain a reliable option until the transfer window opens.
