CD Castellón have turned their bench into a decisive edge, while staying in play-off or automatic spots for 22 straight matchdays.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, substitutes have scored 17 league goals, the most in the division, with Racing de Santander on 15. Squad depth has grown in value since football adopted five changes per game.

Before the pivotal meeting with Burgos, Pablo Hernández underlined the importance of his second unit. Against Burgos there were six changes, permitted under the concussion protocol after an incident involving Camara.

The changes swung the contest, forcing Burgos back. Brian Cipenga added thrust and, on the opposite flank, Awer Mabil influenced the final two goals. He slipped the pass before Álex Calatrava made it 2-1, then finished from close range after Jakobsen for 3-1.

Mabil’s strike was his third of the campaign, each in home wins. He said he was delighted yet wanted more after returning from Australia duty with renewed energy. His aims are first automatic promotion with Castellón, then the World Cup with his country.

Beyond the results, Castellón have rediscovered fluency in recent weeks, regaining the edge missing during their dip. The Burgos win stretched their unbeaten run to six and they enter the final month and a half with licence to dream.

Mabil urged the team to enjoy the moment and keep working, calling unity one of the keys. He highlighted the bond between supporters, the city, the players and the club, and urged everyone to stay together.
