A bonus dispute was raging on between the players and the club which culminated in Tommy Burns apologising to supporters. Unhappy with the players, Fergus urged them not to get distracted with the task on hand. The scorers that day were Cadete with Di Canio and Van Hooijdonk grabbing a brace.

Moussa Dembele scored

On This Day eight years ago, Celtic were victorious against Scottish Championship side Alloa Athletic to seal a place in the Scottish League Cup semi-finals. James Forrest managed to break the deadlock with seven minutes to play, which was closely followed by a Moussa Demeble strike to ease the nerves. The game is most famous for Craig Gordon’s kung-fu kick on Alloa forward Greig Spence. If there was VAR back in 2016, the current Hearts goalkeeper would almost certainly have been ordered off.

21 September 1957, Celtic won their first game at Ibrox in the league in 22 years with a 3-2 victory. The Glasgow Herald read, “the air above Ibrox was damp and clammy, but the terracing atmosphere was tinder-dry 20 minutes before the start when a full half-dozen Eire tricolours were brandished at the Celtic end of the ground.” Collins, McPhail and Wilson were on target for the Hoops in front of an 80,000 crowd in the Southside.
