Atalanta vs OM
Was it a penalty or not? Either way, Marseille is in shock after their defeat to Atalanta on Wednesday night in the Champions League. The Italian press offers their explanation.
On Thursday morning, many were still wondering how the referee in the clash between Olympique de Marseille and Atalanta (0-1) managed not to award a penalty to the Phocéens after Ederson's handball inside his own box. This incident occurred well before Samardzic's decisive goal. In truth, there was clearly no deliberate handball from the Dea's player, but he did indeed make his body larger in the process.
In Italy, the media saw things differently. Sky Italia shared their perspective: "Ederson's control was deemed imprecise, which unintentionally resulted in a fortuitous rebound off his hand. The Brazilian acted on his own and was not challenging an opponent, which is why the referee decided to let play continue. The move then ended with Atalanta's goal."
That justification is unlikely to convince the Marseille fans, who have been voicing their anger on social media since last night.
