New Rangers manager Danny Rohl is not expected to raid Sheffield Wednesday for any of his former players in January.

New Rangers manager Danny Rohl is reportedly unlikely to return to Sheffield Wednesday to sign any of his former players in the January transfer window.

That's according to Football Insider, who claim that Rohl is not planning to raid his former club Wednesday in January, particularly as the Owls currently have a threadbare squad made up of a host of young players after their financial crisis under recently departed owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Rohl kept Wednesday in the Championship before leading them to a 12th-placed finish in his two years in charge at Hillsborough, but after months of speculation over his future, he controversially left the club by mutual consent in July, just over a week before the start of the new season.

Despite initially withdrawing from the race to replace Russell Martin, Rohl took over as Rangers manager earlier this month, and after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Norwegian outfit Brann in the Europa League in his first game, the 36-year-old has led his side to back-to-back victories against Kilmarnock and Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership.

However, the Gers still remain 11 points behind leaders Hearts in the league, and they are also bottom of the Europa League table, so Rohl may look to enter the transfer market in January to strengthen his squad in an attempt to turn around what has been a turbulent season for the Scottish giants.

While the deal was done before Rohl's arrival, Rangers have already signed one player from Wednesday in recent months, with winger Djeidi Gassama making the move to Ibrox for a fee of £2.2 million back in July, and they also made a bid of just over £1 million for highly-rated Owls goalkeeper Pierce Charles in the summer.

With Rohl now in charge at Rangers, Wednesday may have been fearing that he could return for Charles or some of their other stars in January, but Football Insider transfer correspondent Pete O'Rourke does not believe the German will look to raid his former employers in the winter window.

"Yeah, that’s an opportunity for a lot of clubs if they want to sign any players from Sheffield Wednesday with the ongoing financial issues," O'Rourke said on Football Insider's Inside Track podcast.

"The other thing is when you look at the Sheffield Wednesday squad, it’s very threadbare as well. So maybe that would reduce the options for anybody that Danny Rohl will be interested in.

"So I don’t think it’d be a priority for him right now to go back and maybe sign some players from Sheffield Wednesday.

"The main focus is for Sheffield Wednesday is now to find new owners and then hopefully they’ll be able to invest in the squad and strengthen it.

"But yeah, I think the squad is obviously very stretched at minute at Wednesday and a lot of young players as well in that squad that they’ve needed to play because the squad is so thin.

"So Danny Rohl will be looking elsewhere if he is to strengthen that Rangers squad in January."

Sheffield Wednesday will feel Pierce Charles relief after Danny Rohl, Rangers reveal

It has been a nightmare season so far for Rangers, but after a positive start to life under Rohl, they may feel that they can still salvage their campaign, and it is likely he will receive some backing in the January transfer window.

As many of Wednesday's stars left the club in the summer, there are not too many sellable assets left at Hillsborough, but given that Rohl is known to be a big fan of Charles, the Owls may have feared that the Gers could reignite their interest in the talented shot-stopper when the window opens.

Wednesday are currently in administration, so they may have found it tough to turn down any bid from Rangers for Charles, but they will be breathing a big sigh of relief that Rohl is not planning to return for any of his former players as things stand.
