A youth Reserve final in Comodoro ended in a mass brawl as players and supporters from CAI and Saavedra clashed on the pitch. According to SuperDepor.com, disciplinary officials are reviewing viral videos of the incident.
The decisive Reserva Especial “A” match was staged at Estadio Domingo Perea over the weekend. In strictly football terms, coach César Villarroel’s CAI overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit by winning 2-0 through goals from Thiago Villalba and Joaquín Mardones, sealing a 2-1 aggregate and the title.
The trouble erupted at the final whistle, with the Laprida club field overrun by fighting that included punches and flying kicks. Adults who tried to separate the youths were also struck.
Footage filmed on mobile phones shows the scale of the melee and how exposed the match officials were as it unfolded. Motives for the outbreak remain under investigation.
Witnesses said a section of Saavedra supporters, unhappy with the result and the refereeing, threw stones and bottles from the stands and from the dugout roofs. Some supporters added that the confrontation may have included insults aimed at Bairon Ortiz, a Colombian midfielder for CAI, which may have further inflamed tempers.
The limited security presence at a match of this size was among the most repeated complaints after the fracas. The Liga de Fútbol de Comodoro Rivadavia is expected to issue a statement in the coming hours with sanctions for both clubs.
