As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Bologna winger Jonathan Rowe could be on the move this summer, despite having arrived at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara only last summer.

The Englishman moved to Bologna from Marseille for €17 million after just one season in France. Over the last 12 months, the Norwich City academy graduate has further reinforced his reputation as a promising tricky winger, having registered eight goals and four assists in 42 goals across all competitions.

The recently turned 23-year-old has three more years remaining on his contract with Bologna, who are expected to demand a fee close to €40 million in order to let him leave.

Chelsea are interested in adding Rowe to their ranks, with Manchester United and Aston Villa also linked with him in recent weeks. Galatasaray, meanwhile, are also interested in the youngster and could offer to double his €1.5m-per-year salary to lure him to Türkiye.

Lots of good options for Rowe; Chelsea isn’t one of them

Going into the summer, Jonathan Rowe will have options at his disposal. Let’s look at them.

He could choose to continue with Bologna. Even though the Rossoblù will not be in Europe next season, they have had another impressive campaign all things considered, in which they have once again reinforced their reputation as an exciting upper-midtable Serie A side capable of breaking into the top four.

Given he left Marseille after just one season, not doing the same with Bologna would actually help Rowe’s reputation, making suitors look at him as a reliable long-term prospect.

If he were to move, however, there are better landing spots for him than England at the moment, definitely better than Chelsea and Man United.

Even though the Red Devils have had a promising run to end their campaign with Champions League qualification, the onus remains on them to establish themselves once again as a prospering enthronement for players of all ages.

In Chelsea’s case, one can safely say they don’t need many players in any positions, especially on the wings. Their brute-force approach has, at best, offered players to put the name “Chelsea” on their resume and a chance to remain relevant in European transfer circles purely off their association to a big-name Premier League club, though there is little evidence to suggest why this should be considered better for a player’s career than a move to a different club where he may get more game time, more exposure to the competitive nature of top-level European football, and potentially better moves later down the line.

Among the current names linked with him, Galatasaray are his best option, should he does decide to move. The Turkish giants have tightened their grip on the Süper Lig trophy with another title and have been offering bumper wages to their most high-profile players as well. They’d also offer Rowe a much better platform to hone his craft, and he could return to England later down the line.
