Over the past few months, Fernandez has been dropping hints about a potential summer exit, and Chelsea will not stand in his way if the opportunity arises.

However, the Blues have made it clear that interested clubs will have to meet their asking price for the club to sanction any summer transfer.

After missing out on Champions League qualification, Chelsea are expected to lose a couple of players, and Fernandez could be the first big name out the door.

He was a bright spark in a horrendous campaign that saw the Blues finish 10th in the Premier League table, despite his eye-catching return of 15 goals and seven assists in 54 games.

After three years in Chelsea colours, the ‘magnificent’ midfielder now looks poised to jump ship.

Fernandez has been linked with the Spanish giants for some time, largely because Madrid are one of the few clubs capable of meeting Chelsea’s high valuation.

The World Cup winner has also spoken in the past about his admiration for Madrid and his desire to live in the Spanish capital one day.

Those comments have continued to fuel speculation about a potential move, and the Argentine international could get his wish this summer.

Fernandez is reportedly open to exploring a new challenge, which could make any future negotiations easier should Madrid decide to make an official approach.

However, Chelsea are under no pressure to sell. Fernandez still has six years left on his long-term contract with the Blues, putting the club in a strong negotiating position.

Chelsea are reluctant to let Fernandez leave the club and were even planning to extend his contract with a pay rise at the end of the season.

This has the potential to become one of the most intriguing transfer sagas of the summer, but it could be expedited if Madrid decides to match Chelsea’s asking price.
