TeamTalk are today reporting that Chelsea are keen to sign Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace in January.
The Blues are apparently keen to “address ongoing concerns” around Romeo Lavia, who trained today but has otherwise not featured for the Blues yet this season.
Wharton’s profile continues to rise as he plays a key role in Crystal Palace’s success under Oliver Glasner. Top teams are closing in, and we have no doubt Chelsea are among them.
A January move seems very unlikely. Crystal Palace aren’t going to want to weaken their team, and knowing they’ve got
If they are resigned to selling him, it seems far more likely they make him stay until after the World Cup with England, where he can raise his value even further. At that point, Chelsea may be priced out of the market. Having paid more than £100m each for Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, we’re not sure what their appetite will be to drop a similar figure on Wharton.

A move to replace Lavia would be sensible, let’s face it. We’ve given him as much of a chance as possible. Missing your whole first season is a disaster, but he had a bad injury and that can happen to anyone. What’s happened since is far more worrying. He’s suffered an endless series of smaller problems, which are so regular that we barely even hear about them.
He’s been out since preseason with something – does anyone even know what? Enzo Maresca mutters vaguely about him coming back, he plays a few games then disappears again. Wharton isn’t only a very good player, he’s also increasingly looking necessary to fill a need at Chelsea.
