Chelsea are considering a move for Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa as Xabi Alonso looks to strengthen his options between the posts before the transfer window closes.

According to the Mirror, the Blues are weighing up a deal for the Portugal international, whose contract at Porto includes a €60 million (£51m) release clause.

Costa has long been regarded as one of Europe’s top goalkeepers and has previously been linked with a move to Manchester United. Chelsea are now reportedly assessing whether to activate his release clause as Alonso continues to reshape his squad.

The 26-year-old has established himself as Porto’s first-choice goalkeeper and has earned 48 senior caps for Portugal. He also helped Porto lift the Portuguese Super Cup at the weekend.

Speaking after that victory, Costa refused to rule out a future move while reiterating his commitment to his current club.

“I’ve been linked with leaving this club for some time now,” he said.

“I’m very happy here and, while I’m here, I will always be the same player and the same person.”

He added: “I’m very happy here, I very much want to keep winning titles for FC Porto, but we all know what the life of a professional player is like. It’s something I can’t promise, but what I can promise is my work and my commitment.”

Chelsea have been linked with several goalkeepers in recent transfer windows as the club continue to evaluate their long-term options in the position.

For now, however, the Blues’ interest in Costa remains at an exploratory stage, with no formal bid reported.
