Chelsea are expected to make an offer for Alejandro Garnacho before the transfer window closes after conducting background checks on the winger.
Garnacho has been told that he does not feature in Ruben Amorim’s plans for the new season and is exploring his options.
Chelsea enquired into his availability during the January window and remain keen. Despite signing Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund and pursuing a deal for RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons, the Blues are expected to submit a formal proposal for Garnacho in the coming weeks.
According to The Telegraph, Chelsea have conducted a series of ‘background checks’ on Garnacho’s character and are ‘comfortable’ with the results.
A deal will hinge on Manchester United’s valuation of the player, believed to be around £50m, and whether Chelsea can sufficiently decrease a bloated squad. Suitors are being sought for Christopher Nkunku and Armando Broja, while Marc Guiu and Tyrqiue George will leave on loan. Sunderland are among the teams to have enquired for Guiu.
United are keen to offload Garnacho as the Red Devils look to raise funds for further business. The club are chasing a deal for Benjamin Sesko, previously linked with Chelsea, who is valued at around €75m (£64.8m) by RB Leipzig. United also want to sign a goalkeeper and defensive midfielder this summer.
Chelsea’s approach for Garnacho may come later in the window, once the picture regarding squad numbers becomes clearer. There is also optimism that his price tag could come down as United look to offload the 21-year-old before September’s deadline.
Aston Villa have also been linked with Garnacho, who is keen to remain in the Premier League. Villa’s PSR situation has been improved by the sale of their women’s team, though Chelsea is understood to be the winger’s preferred destination.
