Manchester United remain the frontrunners to sign Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall despite Chelsea making contact with the Magpies over a possible deal for the 21-year-old.

According to a report from CaughtOffside, citing prominent transfer insider Indy Kaila on X, Chelsea have reached out to Newcastle regarding Hall – but the Blues would need significant convincing before committing to a serious bid. United are described as still leading the race.

Sky Sports had already reported that United were monitoring Hall and Antonee Robinson as left-back options, with Luke Shaw currently the only senior specialist in that position at Old Trafford. With Patrick Dorgu now operating as a winger under Michael Carrick, the position is an acknowledged structural gap heading into a season that includes Champions League football.

Hall came through Chelsea’s academy before leaving for St James’ Park in a permanent deal completed in July 2024. Bringing him back would be an expensive exercise complicated by the fact that Chelsea sanctioned the exit in the first place – and the source notes that Chelsea’s hierarchy will still require a great deal of internal persuasion before moving decisively.

That dynamic plays in United’s favour. Chelsea have been competing directly with United on multiple fronts this window, but here they appear to be making exploratory contact rather than mounting a genuine challenge.
