Chelsea have a huge week ahead, facing PSG in the Champions League and then Newcastle in the Premier League, and there’s nobody they’ll be happier to have fit and firing than Moises Caicedo.
The pressure has been taken off him in the last couple of months by rise of Joao Pedro, but before that Caicedo was the only player holding this season together. He’s been great breaking up play, and great on the ball too.
After last week’s midweek win over Aston Villa, Caicedo became the first Premier League player to crack 50 interceptions on the season.
With 51, the Ecuador star is a solid 5 clear of second placed James Garner, and by the time you get to 4th placed Adrien Truffert the number has dropped off to 38, showing just how amazing Caicedo’s numbers are.
The good news is that the return of Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo meant a rest for Caicedo on Saturday when we played Wrexham. He and fellow midfielder Enzo Fernandez didn’t even travel with the Chelsea squad to North Wales.
That should put him in a great position to shine this week, in two games where we will need him at his absolute best if we’re to get the two results we need.
Saturday was a good day for Chelsea left backs – Jorrel Hato had a good game and Marc Cucurella returned from his hamstring injury.
Hato might be needed for another important game this week – it all depends on what the physios say about Marc Cucurella.
