Chelsea beat Everton 2-0 at Stamford Bridge this afternoon, and while the Blues scored twice, it was really all about the defence.
Once the lead was secured, the Blues sat deep to control the game, and they relied on their central defensive partnership to get the job done. It’s taken a while to get Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana on the pitch together week in, week out, but it’s paying off now.

Carefree Youth point out Chelsea’s great numbers with a Chalobah – Fofana partnership in place.
Chelsea are unbeaten in 7 games with this partnership in place, and in six of those games they’ve kept clean sheet. In fact, the only goal conceded with that pair on the pitch was when the Blues were down to ten men against Arsenal a couple of weeks ago.
It’s been clear all season that this is Enzo Maresca’s preferred duo with Levi Colwill out injured, and we’ll likely see it every week as long as the fixtures allow it. They have a really nice balance between them, both physically and technically able at a high level and now also developing a great understanding as they play more and more games together.
With Moises Caicedo restored to the midfield ahead of them next week and Cole Palmer building up to full fitness, we should look to follow up this win with more good results and shake off our recent run of bad form.
Trevoh Chalobah was one of the stars of the show today and his stats highlight another excellent performance alongside Wesley Fofana in Chelsea’s back line.
Cole Palmer opened the scoring with a lovely run and finish after being picked out by Gusto. The game had been pretty pedestrian until that point.
