Chelsea Find Their Rhythm in Confident Win Over Wolves

Chelsea returned to Premier League action with renewed purpose, earning a composed 3-0 win against Wolves at Stamford Bridge. The victory pushed Chelsea into second place after 11 matches on 20 points, while Wolves remain rooted to the bottom with just two points. The home side needed patience, control and a spark from their younger talents to break through, but once the first goal arrived, the match shifted decisively.

Gusto Breaks His Drought as Chelsea Shift Gears

For all the ball Chelsea enjoyed early on, Wolves proved stubborn opponents. The home crowd grew restless as several efforts were saved, with Alejandro Garnacho and Enzo Fernandez drawing routine stops. Joao Pedro came closest with an effort wide before the interval. Despite their frustration, Chelsea did not allow Wolves a single shot before half time, which spoke to their territorial dominance.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 51st minute, and it was a landmark moment. Malo Gusto rose at the far post and headed home from close range after meeting Garnacho’s cross. The full-back had made 165 senior appearances without scoring, and Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca admitted to Sky Sports: “Finally! We like to attack with full-backs, sometimes it’s [Marc] Cucurella.” He added, “Last season Cucurella scored six or seven goals, hopefully Malo can score more goals this season. Malo is one of our main players because he allows us to be versatile.”

Gusto’s team mates celebrated with laughter and surprise, fitting for a player whose scoring drought had become an inside joke. His goal rewarded persistent off-the-ball movement and Chelsea’s insistence on stretching Wolves in the wide areas.

Pedro and Neto Seal a Confident Chelsea Performance

Once ahead, Chelsea accelerated. Substitute Estevao Willian needed only 68 seconds to make an impact, slipping a neat pass into Joao Pedro, who finished clinically for 2-0. Garnacho, impressive all evening, then launched a counter-attack and delivered another accurate cross for Pedro Neto to complete the scoring at 3-0.

Garnacho’s contribution was a standout feature. Signed from Manchester United for £40 million, he delivered two Premier League assists for the first time in what was his 99th appearance at this level. With a goal in midweek during the 2-2 draw at Qarabag, his momentum is becoming clear.

Maresca noted the broader theme too, explaining that Chelsea cannot rely on a single prolific scorer and must find goals across the squad. “Our mood is good,” he said. “People expect Chelsea to win all the games but the reality is it’s not like this.”

Wolves Await Edwards and Face a Steep Climb

Wolves, managed on an interim basis by academy coaches James Collins and Richard Walker, battled with organisation but struggled to threaten. They registered their first shot after 61 minutes and finished with only three efforts, none on target, while posting 35.5 percent possession. Despite their resilience before Gusto’s opener, their lack of attacking quality was clear.

Incoming manager Rob Edwards inherits a massively difficult situation. Wolves have not won since April and no team has ever survived from as few as two points after 11 games. His connection with the club, built from more than 100 appearances, offers emotional alignment, but the squad requires far more than spirit to turn the tide.
