Marco Palestra impresses again as Mykhailo Mudryk returns in Hong Kong friendly defeat

Chelsea lost for the second game running under Xabi Alonso as Juventus ran out 1-0 winners at the Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong.

Edon Zhegrova’s wonderful curling effort in the 68th minute was enough to settle the game in Juve’s favour as the Blues failed to bounce back from their 2-1 loss to Tottenham in Sydney.

Here’s how Standard Sport rated the Chelsea players in defeat...

Robert Sanchez 6

Produced a good save to deny Jeremie Boga but was also guilty of flapping at a cross that nearly allowed Juventus to score.

Another promising performance from the Italian, who linked up well with Geovany Quenda. Capable of going inside and out, his pace caused real problems. Nearly caught out when he lost possession near the halfway line.

Wesley Fofana 5

Did not have much to do defensively but struggled when tasked with passing the ball out from the back.

Stepping in for Levi Colwill, he was less shaky than he has been in previous games but does not instil confidence and should not be a regular starter for Chelsea come the start of the season.

Jorrel Hato 7

Made an excellent block on the follow-up after Sanchez had saved from Boga. Still does not look entirely sure of himself at left-back.

Given the captain’s armband on his first appearance of pre-season, it was a typically combative display from Caicedo as he snapped into tackles and held the ball well under pressure.

Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli 7

Assured performance from the 16-year-old, who looked confident in possession. Played a lovely disguised pass to free Palestra down the right flank.

Geovany Quenda 8

Looks ready to make an immediate impact for Chelsea. The Blues’ brightest spark in the first half, he was heavily involved in everything they did going forward. Did not neglect his defensive responsibilities either.

Joao Pedro 5

A quiet game from Joao Pedro. Forced to drop deep for the ball, his final pass was lacking, and he could not fashion a clear-cut chance for himself.

Jamie Gittens 5

One of Chelsea’s best performers in pre-season, Gittens struggled as most of Chelsea’s best work came down the right-hand side.

Danny Welbeck 6

Some bright moments but overall a quiet debut for the veteran forward. Held the ball up well and headed wide.

Substitutes

Mike Penders 6

Nothing he could do about Juventus’ winning goal. It seems the Belgian will be fighting for minutes with Sanchez as Chelsea’s No1 this season.

Mamadou Sarr 6

Solid enough without having much to do as Juventus sat back after taking the lead.

Estevao 5

Tried to make things happen but could not raise the tempo of a flat Chelsea performance.

Nicolas Jackson 6

Bright in spells, he was replaced late after coming on at half-time to allow Mudryk his return.

Aaron Anselmino 6

One of several Chelsea centre-backs whose future is up in the air. Did not have much to do as they searched for an equaliser.

Liam Delap 6

Ran the channels diligently and held the ball up well, but lacked quality. Hardly had a sniff of a chance.

Romeo Lavia 5

Did not look at his sharpest as he struggled to build on a solid performance against Tottenham.

Dastan Satpayev 5

More minutes for the young Kazakh forward but he could not get into the game.

Dario Essugo 5

Handed the captain’s armband after Caicedo departed. A sign of the lack of experience on the pitch for Chelsea in the second half.

Josh Acheampong 6

Alonso seemingly still does not trust Acheampong, and with the youngster keen to play regularly this season, his future will surely be brought into focus in the next few weeks.

Olutayo Subuloye 6

Has enjoyed a productive pre-season and the hope is he can carry on that momentum with the Under-21s to put himself in the picture for a competitive senior debut.

Mykhailo Mudryk 6

Back after 20 months out having now resolved his anti-doping disciplinary proceedings with the FA, Mudryk was given a warm welcome as he entered the pitch late on. Was bright without creating a great deal.
