Chelsea are reportedly preparing an improved bid for Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria.
A fresh proposal worth around €25 million including bonuses is expected to be submitted.
The 27-year-old has already reached an agreement in principle over personal terms and is keen to complete a move to Stamford Bridge.
Chavarria has even agreed to reduce some of his financial demands in an effort to help the two clubs reach a compromise.
Chelsea’s opening offer, believed to have been worth less than €15m including add-ons, was rejected by Vallecano earlier in the transfer window.
The Spanish club are reportedly holding out for a guaranteed fee closer to €25m, with club president Raul Martin Presa personally overseeing negotiations.
Chavarria has emerged as a priority target for new manager Xabi Alonso, who values the Spaniard’s versatility and tactical intelligence.
Although naturally a left-back, Chavarria is capable of operating as a wing-back or in a back three, qualities that fit Alonso’s preferred tactical approach.
Chelsea have been active in the transfer market following Alonso’s appointment.
The Blues recently confirmed the arrival of highly rated Portuguese winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP, while further reinforcements are expected before the transfer window closes.
Strengthening the left side of defence has become one of the club’s priorities, particularly with Chelsea seeking greater competition and depth across the back line ahead of the new season.
Chavarria joined Vallecano from Real Zaragoza in 2022 and has since established himself as one of the most consistent full-backs in La Liga.
He was a regular starter last season, impressing with his work rate, defensive discipline and ability to contribute in possession.
His performances attracted interest from several clubs across Europe, but Chelsea have moved quickest.
While an agreement between the clubs has yet to be finalised, talks are progressing and there is growing confidence that a deal can be completed.
