Kairat Almaty may have narrowly lost 3-2 to Denmark’s FC Copenhagen last night, but the match was a landmark moment for Kazakh football.
Dastan Satpaev and Olzhas Baibek scored Kairat’s goals, with Satpaev becoming the first Kazakh player to score in the Champions League history.
Satpaev’s goal came at 17 years, 3 months, and 14 days, making him the third-youngest scorer in Champions League history, behind only Barcelona’s Ansu Fati and Lamine Yamal.
Adding to the uniqueness of the match, Copenhagen’s Viktor Dadason - also 17 - scored, marking the first time two 17-year-olds scored in a Champions League game on opposing sides.
Chelsea Fans will be keeping a close eye on Satpaev. The winger is set to join the Premier League club next August, upon turning 18. While it’s not yet clear if he will go straight into the first team, his rapid rise suggests he could play a key role in Stamford Bridge’s future.
Satpaev has already impressed on the international stage, becoming Kazakhstan’s youngest goalscorer when he netted against Belgium earlier this year.
The Blues secured his signing in February 2025, reportedly paying €4 million with add-ons. He will remain on loan at Kairat until August 2026 to continue his development before moving to England.
It’s been a promising week for Chelsea’s next generation. Just a day earlier, 18-year-old Estevao Willian scored in the Blues’ 3-0 Champions League win over Barcelona, while Geovany Quenda, who is another player who will join Chelsea next summer, scored and assisted in Sporting’s 3-0 victory over Club Brugge. Stamford Bridge’s future certainly looks bright.
