Chelsea are hoping to sign USA international Alyssa Thompson from Angel City before the end of the summer transfer window.
The Guardian have reported that Chelsea want to sign a world-class winger to bolster their title ambitions this season.
Sonia Bompastor’s side are bidding to win their seventh straight Women’s Super League title this season.
However, they are expected to face fierce competition from Arsenal for the WSL title, after the Gunners won the Champions League last season.
The Gunners have made some impressive signings this summer, including the £1m addition of Olivia Smith from Liverpool.
Chelsea have been busy too, but the Blues still hope to bring in a big-name signing before deadline day.
Chelsea target Alyssa Thompson is widely regarded as one of the best young players in women’s football.
The 20-year-old was the first overall pick in the 2023 National Women’s Soccer League draft with Angel City, and has since gone on to score 15 goals in 69 appearances.
She has been in excellent form in the NWSL in 2025, with eight goal contributions in 16 games.
Impressively, she already has 22 caps for the United States, in which she has scored three goals.
Any move for Thompson would likely command one of the largest transfer fees in women’s football history.
The world transfer record has been broken twice this summer, first by Olivia Smith’s move to Arsenal, and then Orlando Pride’s £1.1m addition of Lizbeth Ovalle.
Deadline day in the transfer window for the Women’s Super League is on Thursday, September 4th.
That leaves Chelsea just under a week to sign Thompson from Angel City.
So far this summer, Chelsea have signed goalkeepers Livia Peng and Becky Spencer, as well as forward Mara Alber and defender Ellie Carpenter.
The Women’s Super League season gets underway in just a week’s time, with Chelsea playing in the opening game of the season.
The Blues start the season on Friday, September 4th against Manchester City.
Their opening month of the campaign also includes fixtures against Aston Villa, Leicester City and West Ham.
Before the season gets underway, Chelsea have one more pre-season friendly to play, as they face Italian side AC Milan on Saturday, August 30th.
